How to prevent myself from slipping into deeep depression?

Getting out and seeing people, even strangers, will help, but for severe onsets of depression, you can either go the herbal route (400mg/day St. John's Wort, 25mg/day 5-HTP) or go see a doctor and get prescription meds with wicked side effects and worse withdrawal symptoms.
