If Natural Selection still applied to humans in a non-monetary way, would there be less suffering?

"Survival of the Fittest" would ensure a healthy and stable population, unfortunately at the cost of suffering. However, a population living without checks to cull harmful genetic variations will inevitably degenerate, and given enough time, fail completely. The only way we can minimize suffering, and keep our numbers at a sustainable level, is through breeding regulation. Quality of life decreases as the quantity increases. (At 6.8 billion we're exceeding our finite environments capacity to support us without adverse effects.) By selecting for positive traits (IQ, athleticism, genetic vitality etc.) we could literally engineer ourselves into something truly beautiful...a self-directed evolution would be an act of mastery. We can choose to suffer, or we can choose to accept responsibility and take control.
