What is living in California like?

My dad is looking at jobs in california (particularly San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Oakland) because we are probably going to move there. I'm from the southeast U.S. (but I don't have a southern accent thank god cause my parents are both from NY). How different is California? What kind of music is popular, just general attitudes of the people? Thanks.
